RICHARD MINIELLY, Royal Vancouver Yacht Club, Canada
Northwest Youth Racing start in early 2012, along with RVYC's match racing programme. Since then we have been to every match racing event held at RVYC. We also attended the Harken Youth International Match Racing Championships in Auckland, NZ this past February, as well as the Seattle Match Racing Invitational in late June. The team comes from an extensive fleet racing background, with results such as 1st at Whidbey Island Race Week, 3rd male U-17 at SailWest Regatta in C420, 4th at Farr 30 Canadians, and 1st at BC Youth Champs in C420.
GREG JOHNSTON, Royal Vancouver Yacht Club, Canada
Greg has been sailboat racing for 43 years. He competed as a junior in the Prince of Wales match racing series coming second in Vancouver. Greg has recently decided to get back into match racing through the RVYC match racing program. Greg has competed in one of their regattas. and practiced all winter against the junior team helping them get ready to go to New Zealand. Greg will be racing with his wife, his brother and a great sailing friend and together we have years of experience.
BEN MUMFORD, Royal Vancouver Yacht Club, Canada
Ben Mumford has been match racing since 1998 when he won his first local Match regatta. He has participated in several grade 1 and 2 events since then. He has been active in one design fleets such as the Melges 24, J70 and Martin 242. He is current holder of the Martin 242 North American Championships. He has been active in Promoting and Participating in the RVYC match race program where he has won two of the last four events. He is looking forward to the first grade 3 event being put on by RVYC under the new Match Race Program.
SAM GILMOUR, Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, Australia
Sam Gilmour is the current World University Match Racing Champion after winning the event in Nice, France in September 2012. The University of Western Australia awarded him Male Athlete of the Year (2012). In June he made it to the semi-finals at the ISAF Grade 2 Chicago Match Cup Qualifier.
Sam is from Perth, Australia and has also been an active 49er sailor.
CLAUDIA PIERCE, Kawau Island Yacht Club, New Zealand
Since coming 3rd at the Harken Youth International Match Racing Championships in Australia in February, Claudia has been competing in the Women’s International Match Racing Series professional sailing circuit. Claudia placed 8th overall in the 2013 ISAF Women’s Match Racing World Championship in Busan, Korea in June.
An all-round athlete, Claudia also enjoys snowboarding and hockey.
CHRIS STEELE, Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron
36 Below Racing
This former Optimist World Champion (2007) climbed from 570th to 36th in the ISAF match racing rankings after his first year and a half of match racing. Notably he won New Zealand Youth, Harken Youth and Musto International Youth Match Racing Championships in 2012.
Chris counts himself among the many New Zealanders with an eye to racing in the America’s Cup.
RYAN DAVIDSON, Balboa Yacht Club, California
Golden State Match Racing
We are Golden State Match Racing, representing Balboa Yacht Club in Corona del Mar, California. Our team has been sailing together for a year and a half now. Individually, we have been match racing for 4-6 years. We have improved our results since we started with our most recent win at the Chicago Match Race Center’s Spring Invitational. We placed second at our local qualifier for the US Match Racing Championship and third at the Rose Cup last month.
We are excited to travel to Vancouver for the first time. We are starting to do more open match race events and this will be our first international open event. We are ready for the adventure!
TOM SITAR, Royal Vancouver Yacht Club
Team No Worries
Tom started sailing when he was 16 in Windsor, Ontario, on Lake St. Clair, first in Wayfarers (16 ft one design dinghy) and later in Sharks (24 ft one design keel boat).
For the past 30 years Tom has been sailing in Vancouver, mainly in one design keelboats (J24s and Martin 242s). Currently he is campaigning his third Martin 242, named No Worries.
Tom started match racing in 2012 when RVYC introduced a match racing training program and since then has participated in 4 match racing regattas (all in Vancouver), in 3 of them he was the skipper. His match race team includes Peter Wealick, Michael Pedlow and Judith Neville, all experienced sailors.
Our team’s goal is one of continuous improvement, to get better at match racing tactics and boat handling skills with each race and each regatta.
LANDON GARDNER, Royal Canadian Yacht Club
UBC Racing Team
Landon has raced extensively throughout canada and internationally in competition. He began sailing in single handed (laser) and has since been involved in the canadian university sailing circuit. He hails from the Royal Canadian Yacht Club in Toronto. He sails with the University of British Columbia Match Racing Team. He is most proud of his contribution to the sailing community in Canada and his participation on behalf of Canada in 2 Student Yachting World Cup Events and as the skipper of the 2012 World University Match Racing Championship. The UBC Sailing team is host to the 2013 CICSA Match Racing Canadian University Championships and aspires to win the event. The team's goal is to podium at WUC 2014 in Italy.
Sponsors and spectators are invited to watch the racing from the BEST VIEWING area on the North End of the Jericho Breakwater in front of the RoyalVan clubhouse.
Kirk Brown, IU/IJ (USA), Chief Umpire
Kirk is a member of Long Beach YC, hosts of Congressional Cup (one of only two annual ISAF Grade 1 match racing events in North America, the other being the Alpari WMRT Chicago Match Cup) and was actively involved in developing on the water umpiring for match racing, which was first used in Con Cup and then the 1992 America's Cup in San Diego. Kirk is the immediate past chair of the US Sailing Umpire Committee and has been a member of the International Umpires Sub-Committee at ISAF. Kirk was a member of the umpire team for the 2003 International One Metre World Championship hosted by Royal Vancouver YC.
Glenn Oliver, IU/IJ (USA)
Glenn Oliver, a member of Santa Barbara YC, is the immediate past chair of the US Team Race Championship Committee at US Sailing. Glenn frequently umpires at the Chicago Match Race Center and is an experienced match racing and team racing umpire. This will be Glenn's first time as a race management official at Royal Vancouver YC.
