What's an International
One Metre 'IOM' sailboat?
These craft are one metre long, radio-controlled, racing sailboats.
They range in price from a used starter boat at $800 (Canadian!) to an up-to-the-minute
Worlds contender at around $3600.
They are sailed by all types of sailors from retired Olympians to eager young
designer/builders. Before the World Championship starts, the fleet
of about 600 contenders will have been whittled down to the 84 maximum that
will qualify to compete in Vancouver at the 2003 Worlds.
Radio-controlled sailing is a great spectator sport. Here at Jericho
the races are held right from the top of the breakwater walk. Skippers
walk up and down the breakwater as they race. Most heats last about
15 minutes with 15 heats being held in a good day.
If you have a chance come down to the breakwater and take in some of the
action. |
