June 11, 2003 - Report at 1420 hrs - last update
before the Regatta Racing ends with Race 22 later this afternoon!
- Racing started early today, 0930 hrs, to
ensure that as many races as possible can be run before the 1530 last start
time today. Early finish time is to allow time before Awards Night Banquet
to complete the scoring.
- Weather is higher overcast with a scant few sunny
periods once in a while. As yesterday, the winds are still easterlies
with occasional south. But the winds are much steadier today; with a
low of about 3-4 knots gusting to 10-12 occasionally.....all skippers with
'A' rigs.
- AUS 141 Simon Kellett ...currently in the
'B' heats..... says he's certainly much happier with the winds today.
- Race 20's Heat B this morning produced
a happy 1st/2nd for two racers from opposite sides of the world: a 1st
for AUS 12 John Cole-Cook with a Disco, and
a 2nd for ESP 150 Alfonso Moreno sailing a CNC2.
Both skippers, who met for the first time at this Regatta and have
become good chums, sailed most of the race side by side...both on the water
and on the dock. The wide grins from ear to ear after the race were captured
by John's wife, Anne Keller, who's also been instrumental in taking 'head
shots' and mini-bios of all the skippers (coming soon to the website). In
the following 'A' heat, Alfonso finished 3rd but John had a bad start and
fell to 'B' fleet for Race 21.
- Preliminary Results after the 20th Race
reveal the top 9 competitors in the same position as after Race 19 yesterday.....
while the number 10 position is now held by AUS 14 Jeff Byerley, and
AUS 169 Thomas Butler has fallen to twelfth, moving GBR 20 David
Potter from 12th to 11th.
- There was a delay at 1245 hrs as a protest was
being heard (Race 21 - Heat C) .... and the Fleet Officer just called
for the 'skipper' of a boat to report somewhere..... comment heard in the
Results boat was "as opposed to the crew?"
- Aggressive starts in Race 21.... B and A fleets....
resulted in 2 general recalls in each fleet ... and the long overall time!
- Race 21
- A disappointing last for 3rd place (after 20
races) GBR 83 Ken Binks in A Heat/Race 21 due
to 'weeds'.
- Race 21 A Heat first 3 places as 'observed'
at the finish line:
- 1st - AUS 147 Craig Smith
- 2nd - CAN 99 Peter Van Rossem
- 3rd - AUS 142 Brad Gibson
- Race 21 completed in very light wind and the
sun is now breaking through regularly. Winds can be expected to get lighter
for the Race 22 which is just underway as this report is being posted;
thus it may be the last race of the Regatta.
- Race 21 - Commenced at 1118 hrs; completed
at about 1345.

venue; having wonderful time despite being in the middle of the fleet;
having an elevated walkway prevents a lot of incidents when you are at water
level because you have a much better perspective than when you are at waterside
as happens at most venues.

June 10, 2003 - report at 1200 hrs
- This morning's racing got off to a slow start
under cloudy skies with light easterlies (3-4 knots at the most) not able
to blow away the low hanging mist.
- The course is set fairly far out to get what
breeze there is but at least one racer says "the boats are hard to see"
when they're that far away..... but a bonus of an easterly is that there's
very little fetch since the land is close to the East.
- There was also an interesting current fairly
close to the Breakwater running about 1/2 to 2/3 knot.
- Cooler temperatures are the order of the day, with
a high of 20C expected later in the afternoon once the front passes through
and the skies clear up some. In the afternoon, the winds should switch
from easterly to westerly of some sort (southwest, west, northwest!) with
an anticipated breeze expected to be 5 to 15. The question is when this
will occur and how strong.....and as of this posting at noon, it's still
hazy and there's some 'south' in the easterly.
- Tony Edwards GBR 75 says the fickleness
of easterlies is not unique to English Bay....they are fickle anywhere!
- Yukihiro Sako JPN 182 says this is not like
sailing in the Japanese Sea but he's having a good time!
- Current World Champion. Martin Roberts GBR 22,
said that judging from his performance so far today, he sails far better
when its sunny and warm! But maybe its the fact that he and Mom,
Joyce, were still jiving around the dance floor at 2225 hrs last night!
- Peter Van Rossem CAN 99 won Race 16 by a
healthy margin. I talked to Peter earlier this morning before race time
and inquired how the Regatta was going for him at that point: "happy","better
than expected", "I'm where I want to be", "the best Worlds yet" for him.....
so the win this morning is an added bonus.
- Note that the Preliminary Results are being corrected
and will be re-issued shortly. There are some instances from Race 11
forward of multiple place '20"s.
June 9, 2003 - report at 1725 hrs
- The wind this afternoon has dropped dramatically....the
lightest winds of the Regatta so far.....and shifted to the southwest,
a change from all previous race days where the wind was heavy and from the
northwest or west.
- Just after 1330, while A heat/Race 14 was a couple
of minutes from the start, the wind shifted to southwest and changed from
a steady wind to light puffy gusts.. With the wind coming from the southwest
over the back of the Breakwater, there is also 'shadowing' occurring making
for interesting and somewhat frustrating racing.
- The sea in mid afternoon (just before 1400 hrs)
was quite calm, and the tide was ebbing. A prediction at that time
that it might prove to be a difficult afternoon of sailing puffs popping
over the headlands of Point Grey to the southwest (near the University where
many of the sailors are staying), coupled with an ebbing current and a lack
of steady breeze, already had the 'A' fleet guessing which way to go during
their heat of the14th Race!
- The Race Committee called a delay at about 1435
hrs, postponing until at least 1500 to assess the unreadable wind (less!)
conditions. This was just before Race 15 Heat D which finally got underway
about 1520 hrs. The race was finally concluded just before 1700 hrs.
- Included in the listing below (now that we have
a compilation of the Boat Survey are Design Types. And don't forget
that the preliminary Boat Survey was posted 12 hours ago so you can check
the rest of the technical bits yourself!

June 9, 2003 - AM and early afternoon Racing
- The fair weather continues but the brisk winds
of last week have abated somewhat and, while sunny, it's a lot cooler.
Most racers are rested after Sunday's lay day which saw most people out
sightseeing either in Vancouver or Victoria.
- A curious light-coloured haze was prevalent for
much of the morning crowding up to the mountains north and east of the sailing
venue.... not even the local sailors were able to predict what would come
later.
- Comments from racers Ben Rusi, Pierre Marchand,
and Baird McLean in the late morning were all in agreement: big
rigs needed today for current conditions..... and, noticeably different,
the lumpy waves thave been prevalent on almost all earlier race days aren't
so bad today.
- Race 13 - Heats D & E were completed
on Saturday; so racing commenced today at 1005 hrs with Heat C; finished
at 1055 hrs.
- A collision between GBR 19 Mark Dennis and
AUS 147 Craig Smith resulted in a protest and a DSQ for the Regatta's
unofficial leader, Craig Smith, and a torn jib sail and retirement from
the heat for Mark Dennis.

June 6, 2003 - posted at 1550 hrs
- Another beautiful, sunny, hot day in the high 20s
near the water and 30s inland.....unusually high temperatures for this time
of year in Vancouver.
- Winds in the morning were around 4 knots rising
by later afternoon to 14 knots. Most skippers changed down to B rigs and
then, by start of Race 7 heats, skippers had to fight to get over the
finish line facing because of a substantial current. There was a slight
delay in Race 7 while skippers changed up to their A rigs to compensate
for the current.
- By afternoon, many competitors and officials are
sporting lots of sunburned skin, with the backs of legs and tops of feet
(in sandals) being the hardest hit!!!
